Outrigger Cup
Annual Event - May 2003 marks the seventh year of this most prestigious sporting
event in the Marshall Islands. The event naturally emerged as a product of the
success of the Waan Aelon Kein Ad Project (Canoes of These Islands).
In 1997. From a modest beginning of 10 canoes and one class, the event has grown to
20 canoes registered in three categories and added other classes including Riwut, recycled
boats, recycled canoes, and canoe paddling.
Aelonlaplap Commemmorative Race - March 19-22, 2003 - The traditional
name for this event is "Iaikwoj eo an Jobro" commemmorating the legendary race
which started the use of the sail in the Marshalls. This once-in-a-lifetime
experience took over 6 years to plan and involved all facets of Marshallese society from
traditional high chiefs to rural-living outer-island children. The event featured
two preceding weeks of festivities including the rarely-seen Jobwa dancers from Ujae
Atoll.
